02Reading a line as a sentence

Take the number, drop the sign, and read it out loud against the score. Three worked readings, all on the same favourite:

1. −0.5: "must win." Any draw is a loss, a one-goal win is a full win.
2. −1.25: "must win by two, and I get a small rebate if it is only one." A two-goal win wins both halves; a one-goal win returns the stake on the whole half and loses the half-stake on the −1.5 half.
3. −1.75: "must win by three, and I get a small rebate for two." The whole half of the split sits at −1.5, the half-stake sits at −2.

Reading the quarter lines as two half-stakes is not a metaphor — it is how the settlement is computed, and it is why a quarter-line bet has an extra button in the payout arithmetic that a half-line bet does not.

03Which increment you actually get

You rarely choose the increment from a menu. Each operator publishes the lines it is willing to offer on a given match, and the increments on offer reflect liquidity and how predictable the match is. Three things follow.

• The line moves before you bet. A published line is a snapshot; it can shift by a quarter when money arrives or when news breaks. You get the line attached to your selection at the moment you place it, not the line you were reading a minute earlier.
• After placement the line is fixed. A bet does not move with the market. If you took −0.5 and the market later moves to −0.75, your bet still settles on −0.5 — and, equally, a line that moves against a position gives you no rebate.
• Some interfaces show the split, some do not. A quarter line may appear as a single selection such as −0.75, or as a paired string such as −0.5 / −1. The settlement is the same either way; only the labelling differs.
