Two quarter-line bets, settled line by line

01Example A: a home favourite on −0.75

The selection: the home side, giving three quarters of a goal, at decimal odds of 1.92, for a stake of 200.00. The split is 100.00 on −0.5 and 100.00 on −1.

The half-win pays 92.00 rather than the 184.00 a full win would have paid — roughly half, which is the whole point. The split does not turn a losing bet into a winning one: a draw here returns nothing at all, because the −0.5 half lost and the −1 half lost too. Only an exact one-goal win is divided.

02Example B: the same side on −1.25

Same match, same stake of 200.00, same price of 1.92, but the line offered is −1.25. Now the split is 100.00 on −1 and 100.00 on −1.5.

Compare the two examples directly, because they are the crux of the whole subject. A one-goal win is worth +92.00 on −0.75 and −100.00 on −1.25. Two lines a half-goal apart, on the same match and the same price, produce a swing of 192.00 on a 200.00 stake. That is why "the odds were 1.92" tells you almost nothing about a quarter-line bet.

03What both examples have in common

The line, not the price, was the decision. And in neither case did the split create value out of nothing: the expected return is still governed by the operator's margin on both halves.

• The split is neutral on average. A quarter line is two bets at half weight. Splitting does not improve or worsen the underlying price; it changes the shape of the outcome distribution.
• The partial result is a cushion, not a guarantee. A half-win still means the other half did nothing. A half-loss still means you lost money. Neither verdict is a profit in the case of the half-loss.
• The exact margin matters more here than anywhere else. On quarter lines, settlement turns on whether a match was won by exactly one or exactly two goals — so the scoreline, not just the winner, is the thing to watch.
